pCloud vs. Sync.com

pCloud vs Sync

The TL;DR

For the chronically time-starved, if you only read this one section, here’s the punchline.

pCloud gives you more storage, faster speeds, and a one-time payment option. It’s headquartered in a country built on privacy law.

Sync gives you default client-side encryption and a stripped-down feature set. It’s headquartered in a Five Eyes country.

pCloud vs Sync

Founded in Canada in 2011, Sync has built its reputation around secure file storage and private sharing. There’s no sprawling ecosystem to navigate. Just a file locker with sharing. But Sync ships with zero-knowledge encryption on every file in every plan, by default.

Whether that’s a feature or a flaw depends on how you use your cloud. Do you want every file locked in a vault forever? Or do you want a working library where some folders are vaulted and the rest stay browsable and streamable?

pCloud also encrypts your files (AES-256 at rest, TLS in transit), but the full client-side zero-knowledge layer is an opt-in feature. It’s a place to work with your files, from syncing and sharing to backup, collaboration, editing, and media.

Jurisdiction

Sync stores all data in Canada. Canada has solid privacy law (PIPEDA), but it is also a full member of the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance. What this means is that Canadian data can be legally shared with the US, UK, Australia, and New Zealand. The 2015 Anti-Terrorism Act (Bill C-51) expanded surveillance powers considerably.

pCloud is headquartered Switzerland. Switzerland is not in Five Eyes. It is not subject to the US CLOUD Act. Foreign government requests for your data must go through a process designed to be slow, scrutinised, and routinely refused. As a bonus, pCloud lets you choose whether your data is physically stored in the EU or the US when you sign up.

Performance

Sync is slower. Independent reviewers have documented poor upload speeds even on connections as fast as 1 Gbps. The encryption process, the same thing that makes Sync so secure out of the box, adds overhead, particularly on large files. Sync acknowledges this in their own help docs.

Who Should Choose What?

Sync is the right call for you if:
1. Zero-knowledge encryption baked into every byte by default is a must for you.
2. You don’t care about media playback.
3. You are ok with painfully slow uploads.
4. The Canadian Five Eyes jurisdiction is something you are comfortable with.
pCloud is the right call for you if:
1. You wants you cloud to also play music and stream videos.
2. Switzerland’s privacy is something you are comfortable with.
3. You value your wallet and prefer investing in lifetime plans.
4. Transferring large files is on your daily agenda.
5. You want to create, edit, and collaborate in real-time on files.

Files deserve a good home. Pick the one where yours can actually live.
